To visit in the region :
The Château
de Montfort and its hamlet are at the heart of the Dordogne Valley,
within easy reach of many places of interest-too many to mention fully.
Three of the "Plus Beaux Villages de France" are within 10 minutes
drive of Les Bruyères; the bastide village of Domme and the riverside villages
of Beynac and La Roque Gageac. The châteaux of Beynac, castlenaud,
Milandes, Fenelon and Puymartin can all be visited with ease, as can
the formal gardens at Eyrignac and Marqueyssac.
This part of the Dordogne Valley is well known as the "Pays de l'homme", with Les Eyzies being the "Capital of Prehistory". In and around Les Eyzies are many places to visit and marvel at our ancestors way of life including Font de Gaume and the Museum of Prehistory at Les Eyzies, Roque St Cristophe and Lasqaux nearby.
The beautiful town of Sarlat with its narrow medieval streets, and well preserved buildings is full of interestng shops and many restaurants. Twice weekly markets are a must for the visitor to the region, as all of the gastronomic specialities of the Périgord can be bought there. Summer evenings in Sarlat are atmospheric. Sit outside and enjoy street musicians and entertainers, especially during the music and drama festivals.
Rocamadour, the famous pilgrimmage site is only a short drive away and well worth visiting, even just to marvel at the village clinging to the cliffs.
Activities
Canoeing is a must do activity here and is the perfect way to get a different view of the scenery alongside the river Dordogne. Canoes can be hired from several locations nearby. Arm yourself with a picnic and enjoy the sunshine and views.
Horseriding for all those of differing ability is available nearby. Woodland walks and riding alongsidethe river makes a fun-filled family excursion.
Golf can be played at Golf de Rochebois, 5 minutes from Les Bruyères. This 9 hole course played alongside the river is interesting and picturesque. The course is overlooked by the Domaine de Rochebois hotel, with its renowned restaurant for that extra special occasion. Other course are within 30 minutes drive.
Cycling is a great
way to see the area. Many quiet roads can be enjoyed on two wheels,
and there are several kilometres of cycle path following the path
of the old railway which takes you into Sarlat. Cycle hire is available
nearby - by 1/2/ full day or longer.
Walking can be fun on your own but alternatively try an organised guided walk with "Compaigne des Guides" de la Vallee de la Dordogne. Based in nearby Beynac they offer a selection of guided walks delendant on ability and desire! Tours are guided in English and will take in the local points of interest. Tours can also be by bike or canoe - equipment included.
Local markets are a great way to while away an hour or two and
watch the locals. Shop for fresh fruit and vegetables, cheese's and
pâte, breads and pastries, wines and gifts. Markets are best in the
mornings and take place locally in Cenac (Tuesdays), St Cyprien (Sundays)
and Sarlat (Wednesday and Saturday).
